David and I became friends when we were roommates during AIT at Fort Jackson. He was an enthusiastic, energetic guy who seemed to be able to get excited about almost anything. Since he was from Ohio, and I was from Tennessee, you wouldn't think that we would have a lot in common, but we became friends immediately, going into town together when we got a weekend pass, and training together. He became like another brother. When we both were sent to Vietnam, we continued to correspond until the third week of May, 1970, when I learned that he was one of three of my best friends who died that week in Cambodia. A lot of good people died in that war. I hope that someday someone will come up with a good reason for it. I do know that that the world is a poorer place because of the losses we suffered at that time.
