The database page for Douglas P McCorkle, Jr
Doug McCorkle was my friend throughout AHS - Abilene High School, Abilene, Texas. I first met McCorkle in Sophomore Geometry class (taught by coach Jerry Thormahlen) in 1966. While visiting Abilene, I stopped through and gave McCorkle's name rubbing I'd taken from The Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC to Lane Frizzell for our class of 1969's memorabilia. McCorkle was killed during a mortar attack in III Corps area of Vietnam in April 1970. I was very proud to have served my Country at the Marine forward air base at Nam Phong, Thailand, with the 1st Marine Air Wing's VMA-533 during Operation Linebacker II.
From a friend, |
My Father, Michael Huslage, was a friend of Doug's in Abeline. I remember the first time my father visited the Wall to find Doug's name, it was a moving and trying experience for him. We sat for hours and cried. This was the first time I saw my father cry, and the first time I knew what this war meant to him. God bless Doug and all of those he left behind.
