Richard and I attended Western High School together in Detroit, Michigan. We were on the swim team for three years and had a blast. I did not know Richard went to Nam until late in the Fall of 1968. I was with E Troop, 1st of the 1st Cavalry, 11th Brigade, riding an APC and manning the M-60. We hooked up with a unit from the 1st of the 20th and the grunts jumped on our Tracks to cross a stream. Who jumped on my Track? "Paton". A million miles from home and he is sitting in front of my gun shield. We spent a few days together and then our unit was reassigned. I went on R&R in January of 1969 and when I returned we ran across Richard's unit - it must have been early March. When I asked his buds if he was around they told me what had happened. Richard is one of three Western High heros that paid the ultimate price for freedom.
